The problem with this book is the total lack of context - the grooves are presented as a numbered list, with no explanations or annotations anywhere except for an uninformative half page introduction at the beginning.

Some of the patterns do sound pretty good, but they exist in a vacuum and as such aren't all that useful. It would have been great to have even just one sentence for each groove saying who inspired it, but as it is I don't recommend that you buy this. Maybe it's worth picking up if you want to practise sight-reading syncopated rhythms, but it isn't worth £10.

Don't waste any more time trying to lift those tricky grooves off your record collection, just get them from this book! There are some really nice bits of bass in here - make your band mates think you really can play something decent after all. Excellent stuff at a very good price, and notation and tab makes it easier to get. I just wish it made me sound like Josquin des Pres ALL the time.
