Customer Rating This book presents in a clear and concise form the basic building blocks necessary to play Irish fiddle music in a traditional manner. The student is taken step by step through carefully graded exercises and pieces which help to establish good finger and bowing habits and which also provide useful note patterns essential in tackling more difficult pieces.

Customer Rating What a wonderful book - it starts with the basics and becomes more challenging as it goes along. There's also some very interesting facts about the different types of fiddle music as well as Irish musical instruments and their backgrounds. A lovely book to own.

Customer Rating This is a great book & accompanying cd. Progression is at a good pace & helps build confidence. Complete beginners to music may find it challenging as the early tunes cover a wide variety of notes & strings. Different styles of fiddle playing are well explained & there are plenty of tunes to try within each - it really helps to play along with the cd to make sure you're getting the right pace & feel of the tunes.
My only (very small) criticism is that the cd doesn't cover all the pieces in the latter part of the book. Hopefully by the time I get that far I'll feel confident enough to play the pieces well without the need to listen to them first! Don't let this stop you getting the book & cd - it's still the best I've tried (of three as well as free tips off the Internet/You Tube) & I'm teaching myself.

(NB not part of my review... I have posted a question to Musicroom to see if it's possible to obtain a cd of the tunes in the latter part of the book & have received a reply to say it's being investigated so it may be that my small criticism above could change)

Customer Rating Brilliant - just what I needed. Only had a chance to have a brief look so far, but seems just the job. Did not expect a CD as well - that was an unexpected bonus and so useful when experts can be heard playing so that you can really get the sense of the music without having a tame Irishmean in the music room!

Customer Rating I found it a very good all round book. Quickly covers the basics (holding fiddle/bow, what notes are where on the music + violin and has a number of simple starter songs) and then for the bulk of the book goes through all the major parts of Irish fiddle, including ornamentation (slurs, cuts, slides) and all different types of songs (jigs, polkas etc), with a good number of songs on each type to learn. It's why I have given it 5 stars, the book teaches you a wide range of techniques to ornament songs yourself / recognise what a song is doing and also gives a good understanding of all the different types of fiddle songs. Also contains interesting bits of information / history about the fiddle / Irish music. Attached CD also good, contains all the songs/examples recorded to a high quality / standard.
