Review
Sir John Stainer wrote this meditation specifically for, and dedicated it to, the choir of St. Marylebone Parish Church, London, in 1887. It has been performed there annually ever since, on Good Friday, and in former years was performed daily during Holy Week. In those days, Stainer would have known the Choir as a large, voluntary choir of men & boys, and composed it so that it would fall into the capacity of any reasonably well-rehearsed choir & organist in the Land to be able to perform. The music & words, (by The Revd. W J Sparrow-Simpson, M A,) combine to create an intensely spiritual experience based on the Crucifixion of Our Lord. Nowadays, the performance on Good Friday is sung by professional musicians and students from the Royal Academy of Music situated opposite the Church in Marylebone Road, Regent's Park. The 1999 performance was recorded live and is available on compact disc from the Church. There can be few more moving pieces of sacred music ever written, despite its apparent simplicity. It fell within the compass of my own abilities to sing the Treble part in the choir of St. Mary's Church, Willesden, London, back in the mid-fifties. Let us hope that this piece will continue to be performed and maintain its place in our musical heritage.
