Rockschool founder Norton York first conceived of a dedicated set of rock and pop music qualifications back in
1990; a world where the CD was still a novelty and Nirvana were just releasing their first record,
Nevermind. In 1992 we launched the very first integrated Grade Music Exams for electric guitar, bass and drums. It was a radical breakthrough (even if it did come with cassette tapes) and offered rock and pop musicians the same grading structure as classical trained musicians for the first time ever.
Fast forward to 2013 and we've launched the fourth version of that very same Syllabus. Complete with album quality sounding tunes that are bespoke to each grade and performed by the cream of the UK session world, including
Larry Carlton, Charlie Griffiths &
