Elgar did not compose his first symphony until 1908, at the age of fifty, although he had been planning it for many years. This work was quickly hailed as the first great English symphony and enjoyed success in Britain, America, Austria, Canada, Australia, and Germany; it was performed some one hundred times within a year of its premiere.
