Canzona was composed during the summer of 1982 for Benner Lerner, who gave the premiere in New York. The composer's intention was to write a piece that would be lyrical and expressive from beginning to end. Ternary form is employed: a chordal, muted middle part contrasts with simple, two-part writing in the outer sections.
