This is the only work for Solo Piano by African-American composer Harry T. Burleigh. Burleigh was influenced by a wide variety of gospel, jazz and popular musics and this suite displays these influences in creating images of the American South, as seen in this quotation from Fanfare magazine:
'(The suite is) especially noteworthy...Ragtime-like synocopation, quotations from spirituals and pointillistic tone painting coexist in perfect synergy.'
