Music and words say different things – that goes without saying. But when it is the composers themselves who talk about music and how they write it, connections can be made: the words are about music and where it comes from, and the music has the sound of the person who has written it. Music is not just abstract sound-paintings, music is coloured by its surroundings, by other music, by paintings, literature, nature, by life and death and people. Bent Sørensen, Per Nørgård, Niels Viggo Bentzon and Poul Ruders are four Danish composers, four salient figures in Danish music after World War II. The music they have composed has influenced Danish and foreign ears, it has prompted thoughts, left questions and wonderings in the minds of all of us who have heard it. The words that the four composers apply to their own music do not necessarily provide answers to the questions their music leaves, but that is precisely because the worlds of words and music are not the same. On this CD-ROM you have an opportunity to hear the composers talk about their own music, and to hear music sound, see it in written form, read articles written by and about the composers. You also have access to lots of factual information about the composers. In other words, here you can make your own connections and create your own words about the music, or you can take part in the debate forum on the Internet and discuss your own and others’ experiences of the composers and their music.
