There is an array of different styles of music in this book: from gigas to jazzy pieces and some strange-sounding pieces thrown in there too. Difficulty level is self-explanatory.
Well worth the money. It's fantastic having every sonata in one place. Most are quite difficult though and the fantasies are harder.
Wonderful. The first movement is quite easy, the second a bit harder (with a nasty key sig.) and the third is mind-bogglingly difficult. It is the complete thing by the way and has lots of notes on how to play it. There are some other interesting bits in the front as well.
Nothing to do with roulette. However, it is completely Russian. Some nice pieces. I think there are five in total. Some are arrangements of lots of pieces, for example, the ballet suite by Tchaikovsky.
This piece is difficult for people who struggle with endurance which is a result of mouthpiece pressure. With lots of "high A"s, "high B"s, "high C"s and at one point the option for a "high D", one's upper register must be solid.
It's so difficult to play. I think the second movement is the easiest. Not a piece for those with mouthpiece pressure problems!! The piano part is worse. It doesn't matter if you can play it, because you need a fantastic pianist to accompany you. The two parts are actually in different key signatures for some of one movement - utterly bizarre!! It's a good piece though and part of the grade 8 syllabus for most boards. Triple tonguing (possibly) and very good endurance with quite good upper register needed (goes up to a B just above the stave, so not absolutely awful!).
The first movement is quite a free sounding one, what with the cadenza and quintuplets, septuplets etc. There is triple-tonguing and you need to be very good at lip slurs to get the ending any good. The Canzonetta is quite quick (for a slow movement) but is a bit easier than the first movement, although has some unusual rhythms. The Rondo is the easiest movement: one of the episodes is quite odd in that it's all in the very lowest of the cornet's register, extending all the way to a bottom f-sharp. You need to be able to double-tongue and the last note is a (super) D, so you need a pretty strong upper register. Hope this helped...
You've got to be very good to play this but it is so good if played properly. If there was a grade 9, this would be the first piece on the list as it is such a testing piece! You need; good lip slurs (up not down); to be fast with fingering; to be good at very fast double tongueing and slightly slower triple tongueing (but nonetheless very difficult); Intervals (from C to bottom G (Very challenging)). On top of everything else you need a lot of stamina.
The original tune was by Diabelli and the variations are by Beethoven. It's very attractive and both lines 'are of some melodic interest' in some places. The variations are all completely different to each other. Once is very much like a march, another uses on and off beats in the RH and LH (not necessarily respectively!) and the final one creates the illusion of 3 parts playing all at one time.
