Cheap and cheerful. Does the job and folds away into a neat carrier.

If you are an absolute blues beginner, or are looking for a blues tutor package then this product is not for you. However, if you need some space to practice and hone your blues licks, and want to have a ball and be inspired while you play then this compilation is just what the doctor ordered. What you get with this boxed set are the very best backing tracks that I have ever heard, which range across the spectrum of blues genres. They are absolutely excellent for practicing and developing your own improvisational style across – and don’t feel they are only restricted to electric guitar. I have used them for working on my dobro, harp, bass guitar, bottleneck and lap steel technique. Michael Messer has done an excellent job and put a great deal of thought and artistry into this compilation. He has been greatly praised in the music press for the production quality on his albums and the same care has been taken on this project. If you are at the stage where you could do with some “hands-on” time to develop your lead improvisation you will be hard pressed to find a better product.

Rory adds her own style and energy to the Robert Johnson catalogue. This DVD is more 'in the style of' than exact RJ parts but if you are creative you will really enjoy the techniques she shares with us. She dissects RJ's cross-rhythms and key slide parts, concentrating on a couple of his songs in open 'g' and open 'd' rather than his classics in standard tuning. The DVD assumes a good level of guitar competence - I would rate it as intermediate. Rory has been playing some of the 'simple' rhythm licks that she shows us in this DVD for over 30 years - expect it to take a while to get them wired yourself! The RJ Guitar Signature Licks DVD by Scott Ainslie is more accessible for those looking for four or five RJ songs to play in the pub - and I would give it 5 stars (don't be put off by the fact he uses a National Style-O and finger picks in the DVD) - I have both DVDs and have drawn much understanding about the depth of RJs technique from each.

For those of you interested in blues slide guitar in all its genres, this DVD is excellent. The Sound Techniques production team has done a fantastic job – the DVD is of very high quality in terms of both sound and vision. Michael Messer plays superbly and features both classic blues tracks (Muddy Waters, Robert Johnson etc) and his own compositions. Michael discusses and demonstrates National, square-neck Dobro, tri-cone and electric styles of slide guitar playing. And his talent and life-long passion for slide guitar shines through. Quite inspirational. Whilst this is not billed as an 'instructional' DVD, the camera work is so clear that you will have no problem steeling licks!
