I think this is a great book. If you go through it carefully and do all the exercises in the manner prescribed, by the end you'll have an excellent grounding in slap technique and a load of grooves and licks to use. However, bear in mind that you'll need to be able to read music (or at least understand basic rhythmic notation) to get the most out of it. Although everything is tabbed, only the last two chapters (out of six) are on the CD - if you need the music to hear the rhythms, you probably won't get very far.

The problem with this book is the total lack of context - the grooves are presented as a numbered list, with no explanations or annotations anywhere except for an uninformative half page introduction at the beginning. Some of the patterns do sound pretty good, but they exist in a vacuum and as such aren't all that useful. It would have been great to have even just one sentence for each groove saying who inspired it, but as it is I don't recommend that you buy this. Maybe it's worth picking up if you want to practise sight-reading syncopated rhythms, but it isn't worth £10.

There's so much wisdom in this book that it's hard to know where to start. I wish I'd had access to it when I started playing - it would have saved me so much frustration. David Mead focuses on 'real world' playing skills, so the emphasis is more on stuff like working songs out by ear, building solos from scratch and becoming a good rhythm player, rather than obsessively practising millions of scales and giving obscure Greek names to everything. I humbly suggest that his approach is the right one. Ninety percent of everything I've ever played during my 10 years of Guitar is covered by this book. I think it has something to offer most players, but I especially recommend it if you're a beginner.
