This is possibly the best snare drum tutor book ever!
As a body of work it is incredibly thorough and very well thought out. Its approach to note reading, musicianship, technique and music theory make it a worthy addition to any teacher or pupils bookshelf. If you only every buy one snare book get this one - it will serve you well.

What's best about this book is that it provides the young percussionist with a good introduction to tuned percussion playing.
The examples I admit are very easy, but that's the point!!!! It allows youngsters to participate in music making from day one due to the CD accompaniment.
It is possibly the only book available in the U.K. that is actually any good for it's target audience(young, novice percussionists)and I should
know as I've spent some time looking for suitably graded material in method book form for my peripatetic teaching.
The book price is reasonable too, but I feel the CD is a little pricey, especially concidering you need TWO for each book.(I don't use it in band class, just for group lessons).

The CD in conjunction with the method books make instrumental lessons more fun!!!!! It also encourages good time & pulse control - much more fun than playing to a metronome or duets. Why is there not more of this type of stuff available? Especially for percussion students.

Wow, I can't sing this publications praises high enough! If you teach or are interested in tuned percussion this book is an excellent resourse all-round. Incredibly thorough, clear and easy to understand it demistyfies the learning of tuned percussion. The teaching of note reading, musicianship, music theory, scales and technical studies is inspirational - It is a very intelligently conceived instrumental tutor book, built on a wealth of experience! It takes kids up to intermediate level (grade 4/5).

This was probably one of Erskine's first drum books, but the genesis for all his other excellent drum books is here within this publication.
I got it a few years ago as it was recommended to me by famous session drummer.
It may not be everyone's cup of tea, but it is definitely full of good advice, ideas, quotes & references. A GREAT concept book!!!!!!!

Most American band methods are pretty similar - this Percussion book is quite similar to the 1st Standard of Excellence percussion book. The note font is slightly bigger though with Accent on Acheivement and the backing CD is GREAT and tempo adjustable! It covers more musical knowledge that the Standard of Excellence book 1 and doesn't just repeat similar concepts. The way it presents snare drum isn't as good or comprehensive as S.O.E. but with a little creativity on the part of the teacher and by using the appendix it works just as well. However it does have a distinct lack of stickings and sticking concept information.
