Once more Carol Barratt has come up trumps. Simple, well known carols for early learners. They all like "We wish you a Merry Christmas" and play it ad nauseum! I find the book usually lasts a couple of years - and more, as there are varying difficulties, so it's also good value for money.

This, as all the books in this series, provides the young (& even not so young) pupil pieces of manageable length, and various styles. I have used some of the pieces as "own choice" pieces in the ABRSM Prep Test, and all the pupils enjoy them. O'Reilly's Whistle, and Mission Impossible are particular favourites with the boys!

One of the most motivating "pieces" books I've come across, which both children & adults all enjoy. Each piece tells a story, and sets a mood which all can relate to. Get the children to draw a picture or write a story relating to Mad Hatter's Funeral March, Lazy Days, The Detective, or Rush Hour Dash.

A book which has stood the test of time. Although not used every day this book works on technique and ability in a progressive method. I used it as a child, I use it as an adult, and I use it as a teaching book. The exercises are melodic and they strengthen the fingers and co-ordination amazingly if used properly.

Pam Wedgewood has a sense of humour! I don't know any other composer who would give instructions for playing in such terms as ". . .with lots of ketchup". This immediately appeals to young learners. The pieces are interesting, fun, and progressive. All my pupils, children and adults alike enjoy learning pieces from this book. I'm glad the cover has been changed so that adults don't immediately feel patronised. I will buy it again.

A lovely book, full of charming pieces suited to young beginners. There are differing moods and techniques to be mastered, including breathing control. All my pupils have enjoyed playing from this book, and various audiences have also enjoyed listening to their perfrmances. This is a good book for curing people of "yuk recorder" syndrome!

This is an excellent book for those who have mastered the early grades. There is a good balance of easy - a bit harder pieces. Some traditional carols, together with other seasonal songs. There's somthing for everyone in this book. And I find that those who would maybe struggle with harder "normal" pieces will cheerfully have a go at harder Christmas pieces, because they know them. After Christmas those more challenging pieces then look easier!

The last lesson of term, and my pupil is hot, cross and tired. I bring out the music dominoes, and the mood immediately lightens. Frown lines disappear, and smiles appear. The child doesn't realise he's actually had a theory lesson! He knows how to build beats using various note and rest combinations, and goes away saying, "That was fun! Can we play it again next time?" Worth the expense, really.
