Ralph Vaughan Williams’ The Lark Ascending, which he called a Romance for Violin and Orchestra, is based on a short text by English poet George Meredith, whose work was popular and well known prior to the First World War. The violin’s climbing trills and bursts of melody representing the lark’s song and evoke rural imagery with Vaughan Williams’ inimitable style.
