Stravinsky's The Rite Of Spring is regarded as one of the finest and most progressive examples of orchestration ever composed. The ballet caused riotous objections when first performed, with cluster harmonies that heralded the end of the dominance of diatonic tonalities and the beginnings of an avant-garde approach that would consume postmodern composition.
