Beskrivelse
This rich anthology of 50 representative musical compositions documents the development of musical style from the early Middle Ages through the Renaissance and Baroque periods to the middle of the 18th century. Noted musicologist and composer Carl Parrish has carefully selected each piece as an example of an important step in the evolution of musical styles, as well as for its intrinsic interest and beauty.
Among the selections are a Gregorian hymn, a 16th-century Meistersinger melody by Hans Sachs, a 17th-century lute piece by Denis Gaultier, a German organ chorale prelude, a lute air by John Dowland, operatic arias, instrumental and vocal motets, a French ballad, as well as works by Vivaldi, Telemann, Pergolesi, Scarlatti, Buxtehude, and other masters.
Dr Parrish has also provided an analytical commentary on each composition, evaluating its style, form, and historical setting.
