As the title suggests, this Sonatine interprets musical elements of sport. With this in mind, Tcherepnine's Sonatine is a highly amusing, energetic and fun piece to play for saxophonists.

Russian born composer Alexandre Tcherepnine (1899-1977), moved to Paris with his family in 1921 following the increasingly hostile political environment in Russia. During WWII, Tcherepnine's composing activities virtually stopped. However, just before doing so, he composed his Sonatine Sportive. The first movement interprets boxers, with pulsating quavers in the piano part representing a defence. Movement two suggests a rest that the two players take before the 'racing' third movement, written in the form of a canon. With such stimulating and imaginative creativity, Tcherepnine's Sonatine is essential to the saxophonist's repertoire.  More

Canzonetta, Op. 19 is a piece for Alto Saxophone and Piano accompaniment composed by Gabriel Pierné and arranged by Marcel Mule. Initially written for Clarinet and Piano, the piece was written in 1888 and can be played by advanced players with a fairly high difficulty level.

Composed in a single movement, the piece features some different sections linked together. It starts with dotted rhythms that are slightly reminiscent of a siciliano, and is followed by a part that sounds like a Scherzando. The dotted rhythms disappear in the Piu Vivo section but the opening theme soon comes back before a grandiose finale.

Gabriel Pierné (1863-1937) was a French composer, conductor and Organ player. He won the French Prix de Rome 1882. More

French born harpist and composer, Marcel Grandjany (1891-1975) studied at the Paris Conservatoire before spending much of his working life in America. His Trois petites Pièces were composed in Grandjany's early career and are simple and enjoyable works, suitable for beginner harpists.

Grandjany was a teacher of Harp at the Julliard School for 37 years whilst also composing and transcribing many works for the instrument. Made up of three movements, Trois petites Pièces begins with a delicate Rêverie (daydream). The second piece, a Nocturne, contains variations in tempo, time signature and dynamics. The Barcarolle third movement is the most challenging of the three pieces, accommodating the key of G? major, 6/8 time signature and semiquaver flourishes. All these combined aspects of Trois petites Pièces by Grandjany make for a thrilling performance for beginner harpists.  More

Having won many prizes at the Paris Conservatoire during the 1920s-1930s, Eugène Bozza went on to conduct the orchestra of the Opéra-Comique and to become Head of the Conservatoire in Valenciennes. As a major figure on the classical music frontline, Bozza's compositions were well-received by audiences, Aria for Violin or Flute and Piano being no exception.

This Bozza piece, adaptable for either Violin or Flute, is lyrical and graceful, displaying the beautiful, lower register of both instruments, accompanied by rich, pulsating chords in the Piano. As music educationalist, Paul Griffiths has written of Bozza's compositions, "his works reveal melodic fluency, elegance of structure and a consistenly sensitive concern of instrumental capabilities." More
