Contemporary composer Amy Quate works in a wide variety of musical styles, forms and media. Composed in 1982 and dedicated to saxophonist Debra Richtmeyer, Light of Sothis creatively depicts the brightest star in heaven.

Sothis, now called Sirius, is the star aspect of the goddess Isis, whose light confines the cycles of nature which bring beauty, prosperity and life. It is believed that Sothis blesses us with sacred illumination and it is this which Quate depicts in Light of Sothis. In three movements, Grace, Passion and Faith, the Saxophone line has lyrical melodies contrasted with dramatic scalic passages, covering the entire range of the instrument. Suitable for intermediate level saxophonists, a performance Quate's Light of Sothis proves to be an enticing prospect. More

Exploiting the Oboe to its full potential, Fantaisie Pastorale is an exciting and challenging addition to the advanced oboists' repertoire. From Lent to Allegro passages, this piece by French composer Eugène Bozza (1905-1991) covers a huge variety of the Oboe's possibilities.

The piece begins with an emotional, characterised cadenza, portraying the pastoral title. However, the tempo gradually increases through the piece, evoking the fantasy aspect, climaxing with flourishing semiquavers and ending with a grand tonic cadence. Bozza's Fantaisie Pastorale for Oboe and Piano is not only symbolic, but also includes exciting challenges, making for an imperative performance piece in the Oboe repertoire.  More

Gabriel Grovlez (1879-1944) studied under Gabriel Fauré at the Paris Conservatoire. His compositions proved to be extremely versatile, from Operas and Ballets to solo works. Grovlez's Sarabande and Allegro is a sublime addition to the Clarinet repertoire.

Much of the composer's works show neo-classical features, which is also the case in Sarabande and Allegro. Where the texture is predominantly melody dominated homophony, perfect cadences are frequently heard and modulations to related keys occur. Grovlez's C minor Sarabande is in a steady, triple meter, superbly contrasted by the fast Allegro, composed in the relative major. All these features make for an enjoyable and delightful performance! More

As a passionate composer, organist and ornithologist, many of Olivier Messiaen's works incorporate these three elements. However, he took a different stance for his Thème et Variations for Violin and Piano, composing it as a wedding present for his first wife, Claire Delbos in 1932. Challenging as it is, Thème et Variations is an exciting, varied and compelling performance piece for all advanced violinists. More

André Jolivet (1905-1974) established his love for composition from a young age. This remained throughout his life, and he held the post of Professor of Composition from 1966-1970 at Paris Conservatoire. Concerto No. 2 for Trumpet was composed in 1955, and remains highly regarded.

Jolivet, himself a cellist, wished to explore composition for all instruments and therefore has a considerable number of works in all fields. The composer's style is also known for its spirituality, and the desire to associate the everyday with the magical, and the human with the universal. Jolivet draws on acoustics and atonality, as heard in Concerto No. 2 for Trumpet. The piece requires high, virtuosic skills due to its expansive use of extended techniques. For all advanced trumpeters, Jolivet provides an exciting, different piece for the instrument's repertoire. More

Gabriel Pierné (1863-1937) was a French composer, conductor and organist. Despite being predominantly remembered as a conductor, his Impromptu-Caprice remains a popular performance piece in the advanced harpists' repertoire.

Pierné studied at the Paris Conservatoire before taking up the position of chief conductor for the concert series, Concerts Colonne in 1910. He remained in the post until 1933, and during this time, he notably conducted the world premiere of Igor Stravinsky's 'The Firebird'. Pierné composed for a variety of instruments, Impromptu-Caprice being one of four solo works by the composer. This Pierné piece for Harp contains many characteristics typical of the French style, such as significant tempo changes, flourishes of semiquavers and many alterations in dynamics. Impromptu-Caprice is a varied piece essential to the repertoire of aspiring harpists. More

Gabriel Grovlez (1879-1944) studied under Gabriel Fauré at the Paris Conservatoire. His compositions proved to be extremely versatile, from Operas and Ballets to solo works. Grovlez's Sicilienne and Allegro Giocoso is a sublime addition to the Bassoon repertoire.

Grovlez's C minor Sicilienne is unusual in style as it is composed in common time, yet the triplets and sextuplets in the Bassoon part provide the 'tarantella feel' required of the musical genre. This is superbly contrasted by the quirky Allegro Giocoso, (fast and cheerful) composed in the relative major. All these features make for an enjoyable and delightful performance! More

Henri Dutilleux's (1916-2013) compositional style greatly reflected that of Maurice Ravel, Claude Debussy and Albert Roussel. Yet his unique, individual style did not go amiss, as in his Three Preludes for Piano, composed in 1982 and still performed to this day.

Three Preludes for Piano comprises three movements; 1) Shadow and Silence, 2) On the Same Chord, and 3) The Game of Opposites. Three Preludes for Piano reflects Dutilleux's style in its atonality and modality, use of pedal notes and subtle hints of jazz influence. As an unusual set of Piano pieces, Dutilleux's compilation adds pleasant variety to the advanced pianists' repertoire. More

More
