Marcel Lanquetuit (1894-1985) studied at the Paris Conservatoire before becoming organist at the church of Saint-Godard in Rouen, followed by the Cathedral. As well as being a prominent organist of his time, Lanquetuit was a renowned composer, but chose to improvise rather than write. A few of his notated compositions remain, however, including the grand and mighty Toccata in D major, published in 1927.

Toccata in D major is typical of the French style and is dedicated to Lanquetuit's first teacher, Albert Dupré. The incessant, staccato chords and memorable melody create a Toccata for Organ like no other, making for an essential addition to the advanced organist's repertoire.

Duo Concertante, Op. 351 by Darius Milhaud was composed in 1956 for the Paris Conservatoire Contest.

Many influences can be recognised in this piece: from the Provence where he was born, to Jazz and other melodies of South America.

Lasting approximately 7 minutes, Duo Concertante, Op. 351 is started by a fanfare with a strong energy reminiscent of the South of France, followed by a simple and moderate Clarinet partly joined by Piano chords. The initial theme is then repeated one last time for the finale.

Darius Milhaud (1892-1974) was a French modernist composer and a teacher. He was also part of the The Group of Six and was strongly influenced by Jazz. His opus list ended at 443.

Challenging as it is, Thème et Variations is an exciting, varied and compelling performance piece for all advanced violinists.

Contemporary composer Amy Quate works in a wide variety of musical styles, forms and media. Composed in 1982 and dedicated to saxophonist Debra Richtmeyer, Light of Sothis creatively depicts the brightest star in heaven.

Sothis, now called Sirius, is the star aspect of the goddess Isis, whose light confines the cycles of nature which bring beauty, prosperity and life. It is believed that Sothis blesses us with sacred illumination and it is this which Quate depicts in Light of Sothis. In three movements, Grace, Passion and Faith, the Saxophone line has lyrical melodies contrasted with dramatic scalic passages, covering the entire range of the instrument. Suitable for intermediate level saxophonists, a performance Quate's Light of Sothis proves to be an enticing prospect.

Gabriel Grovlez (1879-1944) studied under Gabriel Fauré at the Paris Conservatoire. His compositions proved to be extremely versatile, from Operas and Ballets to solo works. Grovlez's Sarabande and Allegro is a sublime addition to the Clarinet repertoire.

Much of the composer's works show neo-classical features, which is also the case in Sarabande and Allegro. Where the texture is predominantly melody dominated homophony, perfect cadences are frequently heard and modulations to related keys occur. Grovlez's C minor Sarabande is in a steady, triple meter, superbly contrasted by the fast Allegro, composed in the relative major. All these features make for an enjoyable and delightful performance!

French composer, Robert Planel (1908-1994) was the son of composer and founder of the Music School of Montelimar, Alphonse Planel. Robert Planel was an exceptionally accomplished musician, reflected in his composition Prelude and Saltarello for Alto Saxophone and Piano.

It is hard to fathom why Prelude and Saltarello has somewhat disappeared from the repertoire. With a typical performance lasting about seven minutes, Planel's pieces is made up of two movements. The Prelude begins calm and, while tonality is exploited and significantly complex flourishes are heard, the relationship between the Saxophone and Piano remains exquisite. The movement then climaxes into the 6/8 Saltarello. Planel's Prelude and Saltarello is an exciting addition to the modern repertoire of the Saxophone and cannot be missed by aspiring saxophonists.

Henri Dutilleux's (1916-2013) compositional style greatly reflected that of Maurice Ravel, Claude Debussy and Albert Roussel. Yet his unique, individual style did not go amiss, as in his Three Preludes for Piano, composed in 1982 and still performed to this day.

Three Preludes for Piano comprises three movements; 1) Shadow and Silence, 2) On the Same Chord, and 3) The Game of Opposites. Three Preludes for Piano reflects Dutilleux's style in its atonality and modality, use of pedal notes and subtle hints of jazz influence. As an unusual set of Piano pieces, Dutilleux's compilation adds pleasant variety to the advanced pianists' repertoire.
