Duo Concertante, Op. 351 by Darius Milhaud was composed in 1956 for the Paris Conservatoire Contest.

Many influences can be recognised in this piece: from the Provence where he was born, to Jazz and other melodies of South America.

Lasting approximately 7 minutes, Duo Concertante, Op. 351 is started by a fanfare with a strong energy reminiscent of the South of France, followed by a simple and moderate Clarinet partly joined by Piano chords. The initial theme is then repeated one last time for the finale.

Darius Milhaud (1892-1974) was a French modernist composer and a teacher. He was also part of the The Group of Six and was strongly influenced by Jazz. His opus list ended at 443. More

Gabriel Grovlez (1879-1944) studied under Gabriel Fauré at the Paris Conservatoire. His compositions proved to be extremely versatile, from Operas and Ballets to solo works. Grovlez's Sarabande and Allegro is a sublime addition to the Clarinet repertoire.

Much of the composer's works show neo-classical features, which is also the case in Sarabande and Allegro. Where the texture is predominantly melody dominated homophony, perfect cadences are frequently heard and modulations to related keys occur. Grovlez's C minor Sarabande is in a steady, triple meter, superbly contrasted by the fast Allegro, composed in the relative major. All these features make for an enjoyable and delightful performance! More

Contemporary composer Amy Quate works in a wide variety of musical styles, forms and media. Composed in 1982 and dedicated to saxophonist Debra Richtmeyer, Light of Sothis creatively depicts the brightest star in heaven.

Sothis, now called Sirius, is the star aspect of the goddess Isis, whose light confines the cycles of nature which bring beauty, prosperity and life. It is believed that Sothis blesses us with sacred illumination and it is this which Quate depicts in Light of Sothis. In three movements, Grace, Passion and Faith, the Saxophone line has lyrical melodies contrasted with dramatic scalic passages, covering the entire range of the instrument. Suitable for intermediate level saxophonists, a performance Quate's Light of Sothis proves to be an enticing prospect. More

Marcel Lanquetuit (1894-1985) studied at the Paris Conservatoire before becoming organist at the church of Saint-Godard in Rouen, followed by the Cathedral. As well as being a prominent organist of his time, Lanquetuit was a renowned composer, but chose to improvise rather than write. A few of his notated compositions remain, however, including the grand and mighty Toccata in D major, published in 1927.

Toccata in D major is typical of the French style and is dedicated to Lanquetuit's first teacher, Albert Dupré. The incessant, staccato chords and memorable melody create a Toccata for Organ like no other, making for an essential addition to the advanced organist's repertoire.  More

Bohuslav Martinu (1890-1959) was a prolific Czech composer, writing many large scale works. The composer moved to Paris in 1923 where he began experimenting in a variety of composition styles. Sonatine for Trumpet and Piano was composed in 1957 and is adaptable to both the B flat and C Trumpet.

Martinu himself was a violinist but he liked to experiment and the mid-1950s saw him move to Nice in France, where he began writing Sonatas for wind and brass. Sonatine for Trumpet exemplifies the composer's influence of Stravinsky, Debussy and jazz music. The piece is excitingly virtuosic in its use of flutter tonguing, complex rhythms, chromaticism, and ensemble between the Trumpet and Piano. As a varied, substantial work for the Trumpet repertoire, Martinu's Sonatine is essential to the advanced trumpeter. More

Jindrich Feld's Sonata for Flute and Piano is frequently performed by virtuoso flautists. Composed in 1957, the Sonata is elaborate and quirky, and has been recorded by leading artists, including Jeffrey Khaner and James Galway.

As reflected in his Sonata for Flute and Piano, Feld's style is deeply rooted in the Czech musical tradition, but he also integrated the main styles of 20th century Western music. The Sonata is made up of three movements, 1. Giocoso (playful), 2. Grave (serious) and 3. Vivace (lively). Each movement of the Sonata presents different challenges, from fast semiquaver flourishes to the lyrical top register of the Flute. This Feld piece is highly virtuosic, yet an excellent and enjoyable performance for all advanced flautists. More

Composer Pierre Camus (1885-1948) is little known today. However, his Chanson and Badinerie is a sublime addition to the Flute's repertoire and proves to be an exciting, yet challenging piece for performers.

Camus' piece for Flute and Piano accompaniment is in two movements. Chanson (Song) is composed in 6/8 meter and reflects French romantic characteristics in its use of lyrical melodies, use of the lower register of the Flute, and chromaticism. The Badinerie contrasts with this with a faster tempo, 2/4 meter, chordal Piano accompaniment and scalic semiquaver flourishes. All of these elements combine in Camus' Chanson and Badinerie to make for an exciting addition to the advanced flautist's repertoire.  More

Internationally acclaimed French composer Henri Dutilleux (1916-2013) followed the music traditions of Maurice Ravel and Claude Debussy yet implemented his own, distinctive style. His Sarabande et Cortege for Bassoon and Piano displays influences of Debussy's eschewing of tonality and Ravel's inventive textures. These, combined with Dutilleux's unique uses of structure and pedal points create a truly riveting piece for Bassoon and Piano.

Sarabande et Cortege comes at the beginning of Dutilleux's career and was composed as part of a set of four exam pieces for the Paris Conservatoire (1942-1950). Yet the popularity of all four pieces remains, and they continue to be performed to this day. Elements like lyrical melodies and furious semiquaver passages make for an exciting piece for bassoonists.  More

More
