Whilst at the Paris Conservatoire, Alain won many prizes and his composition catalogue comprises some 140 works. The compositions in the third volume of Organ Works by Jehan Alain are full of life, mirroring his personality. Gabriel Grovlez (1879-1944) studied under Gabriel Fauré at the Paris Conservatoire. His compositions proved to be extremely versatile, from Operas and Ballets to solo works. Grovlez's Sicilienne and Allegro Giocoso is a sublime addition to the Bassoon repertoire.

Grovlez's C minor Sicilienne is unusual in style as it is composed in common time, yet the triplets and sextuplets in the Bassoon part provide the 'tarantella feel' required of the musical genre. This is superbly contrasted by the quirky Allegro Giocoso, (fast and cheerful) composed in the relative major. All these features make for an enjoyable and delightful performance! More

Armenian composer and pianist, Alexandre Aroutiounian (1920-2012) was awarded many prizes for his compositions throughout his career. His Aria and Scherzo for Trumpet and Piano is little-known, yet it is a sublime addition to the modern repertoire.

Aroutiounian's works have been performed all over the world and he is particularly remembered for his Trumpet Concerto. Melodic and rhythmic characteristics of Armenian music are prominent in Aroutiounian's works, further expressing his nationality by use of ashughner (folk minstrel) improvisations. Aria and Scherzo is made up of two movements, the Aria marked as adagio and the Scherzo as allegretto. Tonality is exploited throughout and contains unique uses of rhythm and ensemble. Aroutiounian's Aria and Scherzo is an exciting piece for all advanced trumpeters. More

Philippe Gaubert (1879-1941) was a distinguished performer on the Flute. It comes as no surprise, therefore, that his compositions for the instrument are at the forefront of the instrument's repertoire, Ballade being no exception.

After a prominent career as a flautist with the Paris Opéra, he was appointed as professor of Flute at the Paris Conservatoire as well as principal conductor of leading orchestras. It was during this time that Gaubert composed, including his famous Ballade which premiered in 1927. Addressing many technical features including flourishing semiquaver passages and a wide range, Ballade is a challenging yet riveting and stirring piece for aspiring flautists. More

Jindrich Feld's Sonata for Flute and Piano is frequently performed by virtuoso flautists. Composed in 1957, the Sonata is elaborate and quirky, and has been recorded by leading artists, including Jeffrey Khaner and James Galway.

As reflected in his Sonata for Flute and Piano, Feld's style is deeply rooted in the Czech musical tradition, but he also integrated the main styles of 20th century Western music. The Sonata is made up of three movements, 1. Giocoso (playful), 2. Grave (serious) and 3. Vivace (lively). Each movement of the Sonata presents different challenges, from fast semiquaver flourishes to the lyrical top register of the Flute. This Feld piece is highly virtuosic, yet an excellent and enjoyable performance for all advanced flautists. More

He remained in the post until 1933, and during this time, he notably conducted the world premiere of Igor Stravinsky's The Firebird. Pierné composed for a variety of instruments, Concert Solo for Bassoon being one of four solo works by the composer. Concert Solo is a varied piece essential to the repertoire of aspiring bassoonists. More

Exploiting the Oboe to its full potential, Fantaisie Pastorale is an exciting and challenging addition to the advanced oboists' repertoire. From Lent to Allegro passages, this piece by French composer Eugène Bozza (1905-1991) covers a huge variety of the Oboe's possibilities.

The piece begins with an emotional, characterised cadenza, portraying the pastoral title. However, the tempo gradually increases through the piece, evoking the fantasy aspect, climaxing with flourishing semiquavers and ending with a grand tonic cadence. Bozza's Fantaisie Pastorale for Oboe and Piano is not only symbolic, but also includes exciting challenges, making for an imperative performance piece in the Oboe repertoire.  More
