Contemporary composer Amy Quate works in a wide variety of musical styles, forms and media. Composed in 1982 and dedicated to saxophonist Debra Richtmeyer, Light of Sothis creatively depicts the brightest star in heaven.

Sothis, now called Sirius, is the star aspect of the goddess Isis, whose light confines the cycles of nature which bring beauty, prosperity and life. It is believed that Sothis blesses us with sacred illumination and it is this which Quate depicts in Light of Sothis. In three movements, Grace, Passion and Faith, the Saxophone line has lyrical melodies contrasted with dramatic scalic passages, covering the entire range of the instrument. Suitable for intermediate level saxophonists, a performance Quate's Light of Sothis proves to be an enticing prospect.

Olivier Messiaen (1908-1992) is known for his unique composition style. Incorporating complex rhythms, harmony and melodies, La Nativité Du Seigneur is no exception to the composer's popular, distinctive style.

Volume 4, published in 1935 with the three preceding volumes, comprises the 9th meditation, God among us. The entire work by Messiaen, The Nativity of the Lord, is a testament to the composer's Christian faith. The work was one of the first to feature the composer's own modes of limited transposition and influences of birdsong. This edition of the popular Messiaen work includes notes by the composer on how to perform certain features. La Nativité Du Seigneur is essential to all advanced organists seeking to expand and vary their repertoire.

As one of the most famous contributors to classical music ever to have lived, Johann Sebastian Bach's (1685-1750) catalogue is extensive. Moreover, being an organist himself, his Organ works are significant and remain ever-popular to this day.

When French organist, Marcel Dupré (1886-1971) compiled the series of Bach's Complete Organ Works, it was well-received, and to this day remains popular with all organists. The fifth volume includes a selection of Bach's favoured Preludes and Fugues and Fantasies. In addition, Dupré's annotations in Complete Organ Works comprise fingerings, rules on technique and instructions on ornamentation, among other aspects. This compilation of J. S. Bach's most loved compositions for the Organ cannot be missed by aspiring performers of the instrument.

Gabriel Pierné (1863-1937) was a French composer, conductor and organist. Despite being predominantly remembered as a conductor, his Canzonetta remains a recognised piece in the Clarinet repertoire.

Pierné studied at the Paris Conservatoire before taking up the position of chief conductor for the concert series, Concerts Colonne in 1910. He remained in the post until 1933, and during this time, he notably conducted the world premiere of Igor Stravinsky's The Firebird. This Pierné piece for Clarinet contains many characteristics typical of the French style, such as lyrical melodies, a significant number of performance directions, flourishes of semiquavers, chromaticism and many changes in dynamics. Canzonetta is a varied piece, essential to the repertoire of aspiring clarinetists.

Being a fascinatingly unique composer, Olivier Messiaen pushed the conventions of composing to its very limits. The composer's music remains ever-popular and his Petites Esquisses D'Oiseaux depict Messiaen's passion for ornithology.

Olivier Messiaen (1908-1992) was admitted to the Paris Conservatoire at the mere age of 11, where he won many prizes. As a passionate ornithologist, as well as organist and composer, many of Messiaen's works depict bird song. His music is rhythmically complex and harmonically and melodically distinct, often using modes of limited transposition. Petites Esquisses D'Oiseaux, composed in 1985, comprises six movements; 1) The Robin, 2) The Blackbirds, 3) The Robin, 4) The Song Thrush, 5) The Robin, and 6) The Field Lark. The composer's enthusiasm for ornithology and composing combined makes for a sensational, unique addition to the Piano repertoire.

Lasting approximately 7 minutes, Duo Concertante, Op. 351 is started by a fanfare with a strong energy reminiscent of the South of France, followed by a simple and moderate Clarinet partly joined by Piano chords. The initial theme is then repeated one last time for the finale.

Darius Milhaud (1892-1974) was a French modernist composer and a teacher. He was also part of the The Group of Six and was strongly influenced by Jazz. His opus list ended at 443.

Marcel Lanquetuit (1894-1985) studied at the Paris Conservatoire before becoming organist at the church of Saint-Godard in Rouen, followed by the Cathedral. As well as being a prominent organist of his time, Lanquetuit was a renowned composer, but chose to improvise rather than write. A few of his notated compositions remain, however, including the grand and mighty Toccata in D major, published in 1927.

Toccata in D major is typical of the French style and is dedicated to Lanquetuit's first teacher, Albert Dupré. The incessant, staccato chords and memorable melody create a Toccata for Organ like no other, making for an essential addition to the advanced organist's repertoire.

Gabriel Grovlez (1879-1944) studied under Gabriel Fauré at the Paris Conservatoire. His compositions proved to be extremely versatile, from Operas and Ballets to solo works. Grovlez's Sicilienne and Allegro Giocoso is a sublime addition to the Bassoon repertoire.

Grovlez's C minor Sicilienne is unusual in style as it is composed in common time, yet the triplets and sextuplets in the Bassoon part provide the 'tarantella feel' required of the musical genre. This is superbly contrasted by the quirky Allegro Giocoso, (fast and cheerful) composed in the relative major. All these features make for an enjoyable and delightful performance!
