Contemporary composer Amy Quate works in a wide variety of musical styles, forms and media. Composed in 1982 and dedicated to saxophonist Debra Richtmeyer, Light of Sothis creatively depicts the brightest star in heaven.

Sothis, now called Sirius, is the star aspect of the goddess Isis, whose light confines the cycles of nature which bring beauty, prosperity and life. It is believed that Sothis blesses us with sacred illumination and it is this which Quate depicts in Light of Sothis. In three movements, Grace, Passion and Faith, the Saxophone line has lyrical melodies contrasted with dramatic scalic passages, covering the entire range of the instrument. Suitable for intermediate level saxophonists, a performance Quate's Light of Sothis proves to be an enticing prospect. More

Gabriel Pierné (1863-1937) was a French composer, conductor and organist. Despite being predominantly remembered as a conductor, his Canzonetta remains a recognised piece in the Clarinet repertoire.

Pierné studied at the Paris Conservatoire before taking up the position of chief conductor for the concert series, Concerts Colonne in 1910. He remained in the post until 1933, and during this time, he notably conducted the world premiere of Igor Stravinsky's The Firebird. This Pierné piece for Clarinet contains many characteristics typical of the French style, such as lyrical melodies, a significant number of performance directions, flourishes of semiquavers, chromaticism and many changes in dynamics. Canzonetta is a varied piece, essential to the repertoire of aspiring clarinetists. More

Marcel Lanquetuit (1894-1985) studied at the Paris Conservatoire before becoming organist at the church of Saint-Godard in Rouen, followed by the Cathedral. As well as being a prominent organist of his time, Lanquetuit was a renowned composer, but chose to improvise rather than write. A few of his notated compositions remain, however, including the grand and mighty Toccata in D major, published in 1927.

Toccata in D major is typical of the French style and is dedicated to Lanquetuit's first teacher, Albert Dupré. The incessant, staccato chords and memorable melody create a Toccata for Organ like no other, making for an essential addition to the advanced organist's repertoire.  More

Olivier Messiaen (1908-1992) is known for his unique composition style. Incorporating complex rhythms, harmony and melodies, The Ascension for Organ is no exception to the composer's popular, distinctive style.

The Ascension was originally composed for orchestra by Messiaen in 1932-1933. Messiaen arranged The Ascension for solo Organ a year later. The first, second and fourth movements are arrangements of the orchestral version, however, the composer created a new third movement; Outburst of joy from a soul before the Glory of Christ, which is its own glory. The Ascension is essential to all advanced organists seeking to expand and vary their repertoire. More

Duo Concertante, Op. 351 by Darius Milhaud was composed in 1956 for the Paris Conservatoire Contest.

Many influences can be recognised in this piece: from the Provence where he was born, to Jazz and other melodies of South America.

Lasting approximately 7 minutes, Duo Concertante, Op. 351 is started by a fanfare with a strong energy reminiscent of the South of France, followed by a simple and moderate Clarinet partly joined by Piano chords. The initial theme is then repeated one last time for the finale.

Darius Milhaud (1892-1974) was a French modernist composer and a teacher. He was also part of the The Group of Six and was strongly influenced by Jazz. His opus list ended at 443. More

Gabriel Grovlez (1879-1944) studied under Gabriel Fauré at the Paris Conservatoire. His compositions proved to be extremely versatile, from Operas and Ballets to solo works. Grovlez's Sarabande and Allegro is a sublime addition to the Clarinet repertoire.

Much of the composer's works show neo-classical features, which is also the case in Sarabande and Allegro. Where the texture is predominantly melody dominated homophony, perfect cadences are frequently heard and modulations to related keys occur. Grovlez's C minor Sarabande is in a steady, triple meter, superbly contrasted by the fast Allegro, composed in the relative major. All these features make for an enjoyable and delightful performance! More

As a passionate composer, organist and ornithologist, many of Olivier Messiaen's works incorporate these three elements. However, he took a different stance for his Thème et Variations for Violin and Piano, composing it as a wedding present for his first wife, Claire Delbos in 1932. Challenging as it is, Thème et Variations is an exciting, varied and compelling performance piece for all advanced violinists. More

French composer, Robert Planel (1908-1994) was the son of composer and founder of the Music School of Montelimar, Alphonse Planel. Robert Planel was an exceptionally accomplished musician, reflected in his composition Prelude and Saltarello for Alto Saxophone and Piano.

It is hard to fathom why Prelude and Saltarello has somewhat disappeared from the repertoire. With a typical performance lasting about seven minutes, Planel's pieces is made up of two movements. The Prelude begins calm and, while tonality is exploited and significantly complex flourishes are heard, the relationship between the Saxophone and Piano remains exquisite. The movement then climaxes into the 6/8 Saltarello. Planel's Prelude and Saltarello is an exciting addition to the modern repertoire of the Saxophone and cannot be missed by aspiring saxophonists. More

Gabriel Grovlez (1879-1944) studied under Gabriel Fauré at the Paris Conservatoire. His compositions proved to be extremely versatile, from Operas and Ballets to solo works. Grovlez's Sicilienne and Allegro Giocoso is a sublime addition to the Bassoon repertoire.

Grovlez's C minor Sicilienne is unusual in style as it is composed in common time, yet the triplets and sextuplets in the Bassoon part provide the 'tarantella feel' required of the musical genre. This is superbly contrasted by the quirky Allegro Giocoso, (fast and cheerful) composed in the relative major. All these features make for an enjoyable and delightful performance! More

Aroutiounian's works have been performed all over the world and he is particularly remembered for his Trumpet Concerto. Melodic and rhythmic characteristics of Armenian music are prominent in Aroutiounian's works, further expressing his nationality by use of ashughner (folk minstrel) improvisations. Aria and Scherzo is made up of two movements, the Aria marked as adagio and the Scherzo as allegretto. Tonality is exploited throughout and contains unique uses of rhythm and ensemble. Aroutiounian's Aria and Scherzo is an exciting piece for all advanced trumpeters. More

Jindrich Feld's Sonata for Flute and Piano is frequently performed by virtuoso flautists. Composed in 1957, the Sonata is elaborate and quirky, and has been recorded by leading artists, including Jeffrey Khaner and James Galway.

As reflected in his Sonata for Flute and Piano, Feld's style is deeply rooted in the Czech musical tradition, but he also integrated the main styles of 20th century Western music. The Sonata is made up of three movements, 1. Giocoso (playful), 2. Grave (serious) and 3. Vivace (lively). Each movement of the Sonata presents different challenges, from fast semiquaver flourishes to the lyrical top register of the Flute. This Feld piece is highly virtuosic, yet an excellent and enjoyable performance for all advanced flautists. More

Composer Pierre Camus (1885-1948) is little known today. However, his Chanson and Badinerie is a sublime addition to the Flute's repertoire and proves to be an exciting, yet challenging piece for performers.

Camus' piece for Flute and Piano accompaniment is in two movements. Chanson (Song) is composed in 6/8 meter and reflects French romantic characteristics in its use of lyrical melodies, use of the lower register of the Flute, and chromaticism. The Badinerie contrasts with this with a faster tempo, 2/4 meter, chordal Piano accompaniment and scalic semiquaver flourishes. All of these elements combine in Camus' Chanson and Badinerie to make for an exciting addition to the advanced flautist's repertoire.  More
