Olivier Messiaen (1908-1992) was a French organist and composer passionate about Ornithology and one of the most important composer of his century. Inspired by Japanese music, he had a very special way of composing and his work can be identified by its complexity, its diatonic aspect, its harmony with limited transposition, its colour and its additive rhythms. He composed many works related to ornithology and birdsong, including the 'Bird Catalogue' in 7 volumes and the 'Treatise on rhythm, colour and ornithology' in 7 volumes.

German baroque composer, Georg Philipp Telemann (1681-1767) was a self-taught multi-instrumentalist, becoming a composer against his family's wishes. However, his musical career saw him hold important positions and, to this day, he remains a major composer. His sublime Sonata in C minor for Oboe is superbly arranged for Alto Saxophone by contemporary French saxophonist, Jean-Marie Londeix.

Telemann composed his Sonata in C minor for Oboe whilst in service to the German Royal family. During this time, he composed a wealth of instrumental music, including Sonatas and Concertos. Londeix's arrangement for Saxophone of Telemann's Sonata includes adaptions for the instrument, such as dynamics, phrase marks, performance and tempo directions, articulation and breath marks, making the baroque genre accessible to the Saxophone, a relatively modern instrument.

Initially composed in 1907 for Bass Voice and Piano, Habanera by Maurice Ravel was transcribed for Trumpet and Piano for this edition.
Based on a Cuban Contradanza, it features a special habanera rhythm and is generally performed with sung lyrics. In this edition, the Trumpet is a substitute for the Voice. While composing this piece, Maurice Ravel was also working on two works with Spanish influence: The Spanish Rhapsody and The Spanish Hour.

Jacques Ibert (1890-1962) studied at the Paris Conservatoire before embarking upon a successful composing career. Stories increased his popularity when it was published in the mid-1920s and it remains significant in the advanced pianist's repertoire.

Written in 1901 for the Paris Conservatoire contest, Solo de Concours, Op. 10 for Clarinet by Henri Rabaud is a piece that has become very popular since its composition. Used five additional times for the contest, this piece was written for advanced clarinettists. Featuring three main parts, its cadenza is one of the most difficult parts of the piece and will require some strong technique and some patience to be played smoothly.

Henri Rabaud (1873-1949) is a French conductor and composer and was director at the Paris Conservatoire. He composed many famous pieces, including this Solo de Concours, Op. 10 but also a cantata 'Daphné' which won the Grand Prix de Rome, some operas ('Mârouf, savetier du Caire Op. 14', 'L’appel de la mer'), and some chamber music ('Andante et Scherzo for flute, violin and piano Op. 8').

French oboist, organist, teacher and composer, Charles Colin (1832-1881) studied at the Paris Conservatoire where he won many prizes. Colin then went on to lead a successful musical career and his wealth of experience led to the composition of Famous Solos for Competitions, which remain highly regarded to this day.

Published in 1934, the Concerto - MCMXXXIV is one of the most frequently interpreted Flute concertos by Jacques Ibert (1890-1962), a neoclassical composer who won the Prix de Rome in 1919. Written for the French flautist Marcel Moyze, it is rated as difficult and is composed of three movements: Allegro, Andante and Allegro Scherzando.

Jacques Ibert (1890-1962) also composed many symphonic suites, operas and seven orchestras, including Angelique (1926) and Divertissement (1930). He also was in charge of the Accadémie de France in the Villa Médicis (Roma) and was later administrator for the Paris Opera.
