Hofner to release limited edition Jubilee Bass

Sir Paul McCartney was seen by millions performing at the Diamond Jubilee concert, and closed the packed concert with Beatles favourite Obladi Oblada, being joined by a plethora of pop royalty including Elton John, Cliff Richard, Shirley Bassey, Robbie Williams, Cheryl Cole, Tom Jones, Annie Lennox and many more.

You may have noticed he changed his Bass Guitar for this last number, from his usual Hofner Violin Bass, to a custom made Hofner Jubilee Bass. The Jubilee Bass, adorned with a Union Jack design to match his jacket’s patriotic lining, is now being released for sale, albeit in an extremely limited number.

60 of these basses, each hand numbered, are to be available later this month, and will perfectly replicate the stunning looks of Paul’s own guitar.

Based on the 1962 model Violin Bass, it will feature a pair of Hofner Staple Nickel pickups in the bridge and neck positions, a rosewood fingerboard, 22 frets, and that stunning Union Jack finish over a flame maple body and neck.

Musicroom have secured several of these, which will be available from our website, or you can visit our Lincoln, London or York stores to try one our yourself.

I have one of the 60 Union Jack Hofner Jubilee Violin Basses being delivered to me on Monday.

My understanding is that the limited edition version is BASED on the model Paul played but from the photo’s I have seen the body and neck are not natural finish flame maple as stated by Hofner in the original product information, but are sprayed blue, similar to a version of the Contemporary series model already available. The top of the bass is finished with the Union Jack design.

Paul’s bass was specially commissioned by the MD of Barnes and Mullins, the main UK distributor of Hofner products. It was hand-built in Germany and sprayed up by Hofner’s custom shop in Chicago.

The custom shop produced a violin bass with a Union Jack design for a trade show in 2008.

I didn’t know that the bass I would be getting would not be exactly like the type he played when I placed my order but the rarity value makes it a good purchase anyway.

Because of the tremendous interest generated by Paul’s appearance with this bass, there is some talk that Hofner may produced a very very limited number exactly like the one he played at the concert but I would imagine the price would be many times what I’m paying for mine!
