They join 13 other acts from past and present in the line-up of the 2012 nominees.
The process is quite an official one, with a committee coming up with the initial nominees before the names are put before 500 rock experts who vote for the ones they believe deserve the accolade.
Any number of the nominees could be inducted at the ceremony planned for April 1st in Cleveland, Ohio.
Rufus with Chaka Khan is another act to make it to the long list for the first time, but for Beastie Boys and Laura Nyro this will mark the third go at an induction. It is the fourth nomination for Donna Summer to be recognised by the industry greats.
The only condition for entry into the Hall of Fame must be that the act’s first single or album must have been released before 1986.
Talking about this year’s list, Joel Peresman, chief executive of the 25-year-old Hall of Fame, said: “The 2012 nominees embody the broad scope of what ‘rock’n’roll’ means. From vocal groups to hip-hop, from singer-songwriters to hard rocking artists, this group represents the spirit of what we celebrate.”
It is customary for bands who have parted ways to reform for the induction ceremony, as seen with the Talking Heads, the Police and Led Zeppelin. However, if Guns ‘N Roses are successful, their longstanding feud might not lead to any musical reconciliation.
