All born into musical households, Chris Martin (vocals and piano), Jon Buckland (guitar), Will Champion (drums), and Guy Berryman (bass) came together in 1996 while attending the University College of London.
Parachutes, released in July 2000, was a delightful introduction with sweet harmonies and distorted guitar riffs, which earned a Mercury Music Prize nomination.
Parachutes went multi-platinum in several countries and earned the band their first Grammy, but Coldplay continued to grow into the 2000s, topping their debut album's success with higher record sales and an increased public profile. Riding on the popularity of their almost universally successful debut, Coldplay headed back into the studio in 2001 to begin work on their second album.
A Rush of Blood to the Head, was released worldwide in August 2002 and the band embarked on a massive global concert tour soon after.

Speed of Sound marked Coldplay's first single from their long-awaited third effort in spring 2005. The album
X&Y followed in June, topping charts around the world and selling more than eight million copies during its first year. Coldplay retreated to the studio in late 2006 to work with famed producer Brian Eno. Recording sessions were completed within one year, followed by several months of mixing and growing anticipation in the media and from the band's loyal fans audience. When
Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends finally arrived in June 2008 it was a more ambitious themed project and Worldwide sales for the album had approached 6 million by November.
The band has forged a reputation for awesome live shows and their attitude remains unwavered, continuing the successful formula despite criticism from some quarters. With Martin’s haunting voice and simple music, the songs show a genuine, real emotion meaning their four full-length albums of melodic rock are accessible to a wide audience and have massive worldwide appeal.
