Formed in 1991 as
The Rain by Chris Hutton (Vocals), Paul Arthurs (Guitar) and Tony Hatton). They were quickly joined by Noel and Liam Gallagher when Chris Hutton made his exit, and
Oasis were born.
Noel had started writing songs for some years previously, and his input became instrumental in creating the paired-down simplicity that defines the sound and songwriting of the band. The Guitar parts relied on barred chords and simplistic rhythms, running through distorted Marshall amplifiers; the Bass was clear and punchy, creating a strong, driven, unique sound.
Eight studio albums later and
Dig Out Your Soul is the second biggest selling album of 2008, going straight to number one. Along the way Oasis have seen plenty of turmoil, with an almost complete lineup change, but the Gallagher brothers are the clear personalities that the public and media came to know and love. Throughout the '90s they entertained both on the stage and off, living out the rock and roll lifestyle to the full.
Although they never quite achieved the critical acclaim of their first two albums sales are still strong, as is the fan base, and no self respecting pub-rock band will be missing a few Oasis gems from their repertoire.
